Volunteers: Thank You

Volunteers with Askeaton Ballysteen Youth Club

The outstanding contribution of volunteers to Limerick Youth Service (LYS) was acknowledged at a Volunteer Celebration evening held recently at the Treehouse, Woodfield House Hotel, Adare, Limerick.

The evening was an opportunity for LYS to recognise and say ‘go raibh míle mhaith agaibh’ to the volunteers who support youth clubs, groups and youth spaces across Limerick City and County.

Welcoming guests, Dermot Troy, LYS said ‘since its establishment in 1973, volunteers have and continue to be a key facet of LYS, particularly in supporting our volunteer led youth clubs.’

‘This evening is our way of recognising the outstanding and invaluable contribution of volunteers to our youth clubs and young people,’ said Dermot, Youth Information Coordinator.

The volunteers were presented with a Certificate of Achievement, a LYS plaque and gold, silver and bronze pins from Youth Work Ireland, which coincided with the years spent volunteering, for example, over 10 years was a gold pin.

Among the volunteers honoured on the night were:

  • Marian Leahy & John Fitzgerald, Domain Youth Club, Newcastlewest
  • Marion Kelleher & Gemma Roche, Kileedy Youth Club
  • Sherley Birdthistle, Caroline Collins, Geraldine Guerin, Dawn O’Malley & Maria Moran, Askeaton Ballysteen Youth Club
  • Joanne Lane, St. Senan’s Youth Club, Foynes
  • Mika Givens, Eric Kalombo & Sean Dietz Montgamery, SOS Congolese Youth Club
  • Laura Scanlon, Newcastlewest Youth Club
  • Miriam Cogrove & Teresa O’Grady, Queen of Peace Youth Club, Janesboro
  • Down Syndrome Limerick Youth Club

Seamus Bane, Youth Officer, Limerick & Clare Education & Training Board, paid tribute to the volunteers saying and thanked them for their years of commitment and dedication to generations of young people.

‘It is a privilege to be here with volunteers who have played a key role in the lives of young people,’ said Seamus.

‘At a time when we are continuing to see the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the challenges of the online world, youth clubs give young people an opportunity to be themselves,’ said Seamus adding, ‘it is you who make that possible!’
