Bakery trainees from Limerick Youth Service (LYS) enjoyed great success at the recent Alliance of Bakery Students & Trainees (ABST) Annual Conference held in Alton Towers, England.
The young people, who are trainees with LYS’ famous Bakery Skills Course, joined their peers from across the globe at what is one of the most prestigious events in the baking industry.
The ABST Conference sees students, trainees and leading baking professionals take part in competitions, attend lectures and workshops while also having lots of fun at the famed British theme park (after the competitions of course!).
And the results were…
There was a clean sweep for LYS in the BSB Trophy with Shane Boylan, Ruby Schlictenberger and Shane Thompson taking first, second and third spot on the podium.
In the prestigious President’s Cup, Liz Byrnes and Shane Boylan finished second and third respectively with Shane taking first place in the Masters Cup winning the Coburg class.
Jennifer McAllister was crowned overall winner in the Harvester Class while she finished runner up in the Harvester Rolls Class with classmate Shane Boylan taking the bronze medal.
There was more success for LYS in the Harvester Loaf Class with Shane Thompson and Shane Boylan taking the silver and bronze medals.
‘Simply unbelievable’ were the words of LYS’ Paul O’Brien as he reflected on another very successful weekend at the ABST Conference.
‘The trainees should be extremely proud of themselves as they represented their families, friends and LYS with pride,’ said Paul, Baking Instructor.
‘They went above and beyond in preparing for this year’s competitions and deserve all the success they achieved,’ added a very proud Paul who thanked his colleagues for all their support.
Supported by Limerick & Clare Education & Training Board, the Bakery Skills Course is a FDQ accredited QQI Level 4 project that is based at LYS’ Community Training Centre, Lr. Glentworth St, Limerick City.
