Opening of Garryowen Community Garden

Limerick Youth Service, the Garryowen Community Development Project and the Garryowen Residents Association, will open the new Garryowen Community Garden at the Kilmurry Road, Garryowen (next to Geraldine’s AFC) this Friday, June 21st from 3-5:30pm.

Young people and families from the community and beyond are invited to attend the launch in what promises to be a fun filled and information afternoon, particularly for ‘green fingered enthusiasts’ as there will be gardening demos and an opportunity for you to plant your own flowers and blubs.

‘Many of the young people have an interest in gardening and horticulture and this is an exciting opportunity for them’

To add to the excitement of the launch of the Garryowen Community Garden, there will also games and sports for young people, entertainment and light refreshments.

‘The birth of the new Community Garden came about after conversations between young people and local community groups who were keen to develop a allotments,’ said Robert McCarthney, LYS.

‘Many of the young people have an interest in gardening and horticulture and this is an exciting opportunity for them, their families and community to learn more about gardening, enjoy the outdoors and meet each other,’ said Robert, Youth Worker, LYS Youth Diversion Project.

Robert was keen to thank the young people, locals and community groups for working together to create the Garryowen Community Garden.

‘They’ve all been excellent, particularly the young people who have committed a great amount of the their free time to getting the project over the line,’ said Rob.

The young people are members of the Irishtown hub of the LYS Youth Diversion Project and the Garryowen Youth Together Project.
