Malta. Italy. Germany. Ukraine. Spain. France! No it’s not the Eurovision Song Contest, it’s just some of the many countries that young people from Limerick Youth Service have been to as part of an international youth exchange!
If you were in these or other European countries with LYS between 2009-15, then you are invited to a European Reunion at LYS, 5 Glentworth St, Limerick on Thursday, May 24th at 7pm.
Youth exchanges are key feature of LYS’ youth work programmes with 1000s of young people taking part in exchanges since the organisation was founded in 1973.
Every exchange has a theme such as access to education, youth unemployment, mental health, equality, understanding diversity and politics to name but a few.
Culture and society are an important part of international youth work with teenagers from different nations and languages spending time together, learning about each other’s similarities and differences.
‘The evening is a great opportunity to meet old friends, relive memories and share your experiences of international youth work,’ said Eibhlis Bray, LYS.
‘For many young people an international exchange with LYS was their first experience of travel with a number of them saying it ignited the travel bug!’ said Eibhlis, a veteran of several European projects.
‘We are keen to hear how this experience influences their lives and to capture the impact that it had so we can share it with current young people,’ explained Eibhlis.
The evening is for people who took part in exchanges from 2009-2015 and includes several youth conferences that LYS hosted including a Share Our Stories (SOS) event in 2012.
For more details please contact Eibhlis at eibhlisb@limerickyouthservice.org or 061-412444.
Youth exchanges are supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme and Leargas.
A member of Youth Work Ireland, Limerick Youth Service remains committed to connecting with young people and supporting them to reach their full potential.
