MY STORY

‘What young people want from school mental health and suicide prevention: A MYSTORY (Mental Health Of Youth Story) co-created video’ shares the perspectives of young people on school mental health and suicide prevention.

In 2022, the Be Well Limerick City Youth Mental Health Advisory Panel (YAP) participated in a photography research project with the University of Limerick.

The overarching aims of the MYSTORY study are to:

  1. Understand young people’s perspectives on youth and school mental health and suicide prevention
  2. Meaningfully involve and empower young people in research
  3. Harness the voice of young people in research and community spaces.

This co-created MYSTORY video provides the opportunity for young people to communicate how schools could enhance school mental health and suicide prevention, by sharing three asks of young people, based on young people’s experiences.

Young people involved in this video are advisory members of Be Well who collaborated in the MYSTORY study with John Real, Limerick Youth Service, Dr. Jennifer McMahon, University of Limerick and Eibhlin Walsh, University of Limerick.

Young people’s involvement in school mental health aligns with Article 12 of the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child, which outlines that young people have rights to express views on matters impacting them.

This video was launched at the University of Limerick on Friday June 3rd 2022, thanks to funding from PPI Ignite UL, Limerick Youth Service and the School, Child, Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing research lab. The video was also shared with post primary schools across Ireland during World Mental Health Month, October 2022.
